PG Dip Play Therapy

  • DeadlineStudy Details:

    PgDip: 1 year part-time

Course Description

Changes to modern family life, such as high divorce rates, the decline of the extended family, easy access to alcohol and drugs, and other socio-cultural factors have all had an impact on today’s younger generation. Throughout our course, you will develop your `Play Therapy Tool-kit’ competencies at an advanced level, using mediums such as storytelling, music, dance and drama, to work with children who have serious social, emotional, behaviour and mental health difficulties.

You may come from any background such as counselling, psychotherapy, clinical psychology, primary and nursery education, nursing, social work, play school, care or adoption and fostering. You will focus primarily on non-directive play, where you will encourage the child to work towards their own solutions to problems, so you can then begin to explore ways of integrating the child as the centre of a social system, such as in schools, families and teams of support.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have completed the PG Certificate Therapeutic Play Skills at Leeds Beckett University, or hold an equivalent qualification. Have a minimum of 50 hours of clinically supervised practice. Applicants should have a work based placement, which may be the applicant’s place of work, and a PTUK approved Clinical Supervisor member, who must be in place before clinical work starts.

Applicants will also need to evidence their Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover. All suitable candidates will be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process (either at an introductory day or by telephone). Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course.

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.
